We receive so many questions about getting to La Paz by air, that I have decided to do a separate page that I hope answers some questions you might have. Since there are so many changes in the scheduling and airlines flying into the two airports that serve the state of Baja California Sur, especially the La Paz airport, please use this only as a guide. This was last updated July 2007.

La Paz Airport (LAP)

At the present time more of our charterers fly into the La Paz airport (LAP) because of the afternoon flight of Alaska Airlines that arrives in La Paz at 2:48 PM from Los Angeles (LAX). It is my understanding that you save money by buying on line direct from Alaska (http://www.alaskaair.com/) Delta has a smaller plane that flies from LAX to La Paz in the afternoon and usually arrives about an hour earlier than the Alaskan flight. It is an Embracer 145 operated by Express Jet( http://www.delta.com/).  Aero Mexico has a lot of flights into La Paz, and they are worth a check, but they are usually expensive (http://aeromexico.com/. Aero California (http://aerocalifornia.com/) is based in La Paz and used to fly from LAX and is rumored to be flying again from LAX in the fall. There is even talk of direct flights from Denver, by either Continental or Frontier. This would be great as most charterers from other than the west coast fly into San Jose del Cabo.

Another way to get to La Paz is to fly into San Diego (SAN). Both Aero Mexico & Aero California have flights from Tijuana (TIJ). Aero California usually has some real bargains. Many of the Americans living in La Paz fly to TJ as it is called. Their flights are usually in the morning. The Tijuana airport is right next to the US border. If you fly into San Diego, the bus stops right at the SD airport. You take the bus downtown to the trolley station, which is across the street from the bus stop. You use the same ticket to board the trolley, which will take you right to the border. The cost is $3.00 or $1.50, if you are a senior. You then walk right across the border, and catch a taxi to the airport, which costs about $20 for the taxi. There are also airport vans that go from San Diego airport to the Tijuana airport.

Southwest (http://southwest.com)which is one of the airlines that flies into San Diego, has direct flights from most major cities in the US. They are a convenient and economical way to fly to San Diego.

San Jose del Cabo airport (SJC)

The airport at San Jose del Cabo is by far the larger with two terminals. Most of the major airlines fly into SJC from all over the United States and Mexico. The problem is that SJC is about 120 miles from La Paz, and it requires you to either travel to La Paz by van, taxi, bus or renting a car.

About 40% of our charters fly into Cabo because of frequent flyer miles, discounted airfares and a greater selection of airlines. A new airline that just started to fly into SJC is Frontier (http://frontierairlines.com), that has its hub in Denver. They have some great rates.

Some charters take the Penisula Ejectivo bus line which runs approximately every hour and one/half to La Paz. The cost is approximately $25 per person.
While they do not pick up at the airport, they will take you to the airport from La Paz when you return. There are other bus lines that are nice (Aguila is one). but their buses are the best.  You can go direct to the bus stop in San Jose del Cabo, or if you are adventurous, go out to the highway and catch one to La Paz.

All seven of the major car rental companies serve La Paz. Car rentals can be expensive as there is a drop-off fee for La Paz on a one-way. However some of our charters have gotten very reasonable rates. If you do rent a car, I have heard, it is the cheapest to do it on-line in the USA. Some of our charterers have rented a car to take them to La Paz and then taken the bus for their return trip. There is a private van service, very nice, but a little expensive, great website, http://transbaja.com/. They also have a toll free; 1-888-800-9619,but you must book on-line.

The trip is about three hours and takes you through the mountains. The road is narrower than what you are used to in the US, but if you do drive it, it is an easy drive and not much traffic. It is very scenic and picturesque.
