AIRLINE INFORMATION
Use these flights for your next Sailboat Charter

Since most of our charters fly into La Paz or San Jose del Cabo, I hope this information is of help to you. There are many changes in scheduling and airlines flying into the two airports that serve the state of Baja California Sur especially La Paz, so please use this only as a guide. This was last updated January 2010.

La Paz Airport (LAP)

At the present time, there are three airlines that fly into the La Paz airport (LAP). They are Alaska( Horizon), Volaris and Aeromexico. Most of our charters fly into the La Paz airport because of the afternoon flight of Alaska Airlines (Horizon). It leaves Los Angeles at 10:50 a.m. and arrives in La Paz at 2:05 p.m. (there is a one hour time change) direct from Los Angeles (LAX). They fly Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The flight number is 2603. They return to Los Angeles at 2:50 p.m. and arrive at 4:15 p,m. The flight number is 2604 We will meet you at the airport for no charge. It is my understanding that you save money by buying on-line (http://www.alaskaair.com/).. Horizon flies Bombardier CRJ jets. They seat 70 passengers.

Aeromexico has many flights into La Paz. They are worth a check but they are usually expensive (http://aeromexico.com/. They do not have a direct flight from Tijuana, and are used mainly by charters who fly into Mexico City from Europe and eastern US and Canada.

Another way to get to La Paz is to fly into San Diego (SAN). The only airline currently flying from Tijuana (TIJ) directly is Volaris (http://volaris.com.mx). When you go to their website, click on the American flag to get English. An easier way to get to their website is to click on the Southwest airline website (http://southwest.com) and click on Mexico flights and the Volaris site comes up .Their flight, number 580, leaves TJ at 1:10 p.m. and arrives in La Paz at 4:05 p.m. Their flight from La Paz to TJ, number 581, leaves at 10:50a.m. and arrives at 11:56 a.m. It is best to call their toll free number 1-866-988-3527. Also you will see three different prices. Check on one of them and you will see it has to do with baggage and whether you can change the date of your tickets. Their planes are Airbus A320, and average 3 years of age. They have a bus that will pick you up at the Amtrak station in downtown San Diego (check “service” on their website for full particulars) and will take you directly to the airport for $15. You have to check in two and one/half hours before your flight. If you fly into San Diego, the bus stops right at the SD airport or you can take a taxi to the Amtrak station. Another way is to take the bus downtown to the trolley station, which is across the street from the bus stop. You use the same ticket to board the trolley, which will take you right to the border. The cost is $3.00 or $1.50, if you are a senior. You then walk across the border and catch a taxi to the airport which costs about $20 for the taxi. The airport is right next to the US border. There are also airport vans that go from San Diego airport to the Tijuana airport.

Southwest (http://southwest.com) is one of the airlines that flies into San Diego (SAN), and has direct flights from most major cities in the US. They are a convenient and economical way to fly to San Diego. Volaris and Southwest are partnering up, so in the future you may be able to buy Volaris tickets at Southwest and get some really economical flights.

San Jose del Cabo airport (SJC)

The airport at San Jose del Cabo is by far the larger of the two terminals. Most of the major airlines fly into SJC from all over the United States and Mexico. . The list of airlines include; American, Delta, Continental, Mexicana, and Alaska. About 30% of our charters fly into Cabo because of frequent flyer miles, discounted airfares and a greater selection of airlines.

The big problem is that SJC is about 120 miles from La Paz, and it requires you to either travel to La Paz by van, taxi, bus or by renting a car.

The buses do not pick you up at the airport. It will be necessary to take a taxi direct to the bus terminal in San Jose del Cabo. Some charters take the Peninsula Ejectivo bus line which runs approximately every hour and one/half to La Paz. The cost is approximately $25 per person. While they do not pick up at the airport, they will take you direct to the airport from La Paz when you return. There is another bus line, Aguila, which has good buses too. Try to get one that would take you to La Paz nonstop. They are a little cheaper.

All seven of the major car rental companies serve La Paz. Car rentals can be expensive as there is a drop-off fee for La Paz on a one-way. However, some of our charters have gotten very reasonable rates. If you do rent a car, I have heard, it is cheaper to do it on-line. Some of our charters rent a car to take them to La Paz and then take the bus for their return trip. There is a private van service, very nice, but a little expensive, great website, http://transbaja.com/. They also have a toll free; 1-888-800-9619, but you must book on-line. I do have the name and phone number for a taxi/van that I met if you are interested.

The trip is about three hours and takes you through the mountains. The road is narrower than what you are used to in the US, but if you do drive it, it is an easy drive and not much traffic. It is very scenic and picturesque.
